Dillion Middle School Expansion & Remodel

Project overview

The scope of work for this project included the addition, consolidation, and remodel of Dillon School Districts Pre-K through 8th grade facilities. This project included infrastructure upgrades to lighting, heating, cooling, communications and building structure, roofs, windows, and overall insulation values.

A total area of 125k square feet was added and remodeled.

The overall square footage of building was increased by 30% but the average monthly utility cost was kept the same.

School district facilities were consolidated into one campus. This reduced staff transportation and food service, reduced overall district maintenance and increased communication among all users.

Large new modern gymnasium allowed for more flexible multi-purpose space in the elementary school.

Process

  • We worked with the teachers, principals, school district leaders and the building committee to determine current and future needs.
  • This was a team effort with the contractor as a design-build scenario. This allowed development of additional information and ideas earlier, in a more accurate fashion. We were able to discuss design options with the contractor and owner as we were finalizing the design.
  • To maintain an accurate project schedule, we worked with the contractor very early to develop optional construction sequencing and phasing schedules which optimize weather, travel, labor, and material impacts. All this occurred during the design phase, so we had a clear plan well before construction.
  • Among the many elements of this project was the complete re-roof of both the Middle School and Elementary School. In this re-roof work some deficient structural issues were addressed while increasing overall insulation on all the roofs. Thus, providing for both a safer and more energy efficient buildings.

Outcome

The main addition was for district administration, but also tied the elementary school and middle school together through a new shared library, computer room, and gym. The gym was designed to accommodate activities from pre-school exercise activates to high school level sports. The remaining budget was used to renovate portions of the existing schools such as the cafeteria, classrooms, technology, and existing administrative spaces; as well as infrastructure upgrades to lighting, heating/cooling, and communications systems. This was all done while maintaining the original budget as bonded, along with meeting the original project schedule.

“Mr. Perpignano was directly responsible for the design of our project and through his leadership, his group was able to meet its many challenges and come up with a design that not only met our needs, but also fit within our budget.”
—Dr. Glen Johnson, School Superintendent
